Trooper Nicholas Dees and Trooper Keith Burch Act (texting ban)
Effective November 1, 2015, it is unlawful to manually compose, send, or read a text message on a handheld device while your vehicle is in motion. Texting while driving is a primary offense carrying a $100 fine.
Move Over Law
When approaching any stationary vehicle displaying flashing lights — including emergency, maintenance, and tow vehicles, or even a car with hazard lights — you must move into a lane not adjacent to it. If you cannot move over safely, slow to a safe speed for conditions.
Intermediate license night curfew
Oklahoma intermediate (graduated) license holders may only drive between 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM, except when traveling to or from school, church, or work, or when accompanied by a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat.
Intermediate license passenger limit
Intermediate license holders may carry only one passenger unless the other passengers are household members, or unless a licensed driver 21 or older is seated in the front seat.
Implied consent and mandatory revocation
By driving in Oklahoma you consent to a breath or blood test if arrested for impaired driving. Refusing the test, or failing to stop and render aid in a collision causing death or injury, results in mandatory revocation of your driver license.
How to get your Oklahoma driver's license
The knowledge test is one step in Oklahoma's licensing process. Here's how the path typically works for a new driver.
Check the age and eligibility requirements
Eligibility in Oklahoma: 15 while enrolled in an approved driver education course; 16 without driver education (learner permit). Have your proof of identity, residency, and any required parental consent ready.
Study the official handbook
Read the Official Oklahoma Driver Manual (oklahoma.gov) and practice with DMV Ace until you're consistently scoring above 75%.
Pass the knowledge test
The Oklahoma written test has 20 questions, and you need 15 correct (75%) to pass. You have 60 minutes. Permit/licensing fee: $42.50 to issue the learner permit, plus $4 for each failed written-test attempt.
Build supervised driving experience
Hold your permit for the period Oklahoma requires and log supervised driving hours with a licensed adult before you schedule the road test.
Pass the road test and get licensed
After you pass the behind-the-wheel road test, Oklahoma issues your driver's license — often an intermediate/provisional license first for younger drivers.
Steps are a general guide — always confirm the current process with your local Oklahoma DMV office.
