Wyoming DMV Practice Test 2026
Updated for 2026 · Sourced from the official Wyoming handbook
The Wyoming knowledge test is a 25-question multiple-choice exam drawn from the official Wyoming Rules of the Road Driver License Manual, covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe-driving practices. You need 80% (20 out of 25) to pass, and Wyoming does not impose a time limit on the written test. Wyoming driving brings challenges many first-timers underestimate — big-game animals on rural highways, 80 mph interstate limits, and long winter distances. Work through the real, manual-sourced practice questions below, then download DMV Ace for 1,000+ more Wyoming-specific questions, progress tracking, and a full explanation on every answer.

Question 1 · Speed Limits
What is the maximum speed limit on Wyoming interstates?
- A65 mph
- B75 mph
- C80 mph✓ Correct
Why: The maximum speed limit on Wyoming interstate highways is 80 mph for passenger vehicles under ideal conditions. A posted limit is the maximum for ideal road, weather, and traffic conditions — not a target for poor conditions.

Question 2 · Right of Way
When making a left turn at an intersection, who must you yield to?
- ANo one, as long as you signal first
- BOncoming traffic and pedestrians in the intersection✓ Correct
- COnly vehicles that are turning right
Why: When turning left you must yield to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians in the intersection. Complete the turn only after the way is clear.

Question 3 · Traffic Signs & Signals
What does a flashing yellow traffic light mean?
- AStop and wait for a green light
- BSlow down and proceed with caution✓ Correct
- CThe signal is broken — treat it as a stop sign
Why: A flashing yellow light means slow down and proceed with caution through the intersection. A flashing red light, by contrast, means stop and proceed only when safe.

Question 4 · DUI Laws
What is the only thing that will lower your BAC?
- ADrinking black coffee
- BTime✓ Correct
- CTaking a cold shower
Why: Only time reduces your blood alcohol content (BAC). Coffee, cold showers, food, and exercise do not speed up the elimination of alcohol from your body.

Question 5 · Highway Driving
What should you do if your vehicle becomes disabled on a highway?
- APull completely off the road and turn on your hazard flashers✓ Correct
- BStay in the traffic lane with your hazard lights on
- CWalk along the highway to find help
Why: If your vehicle becomes disabled, move it completely off the road if possible and turn on your hazard flashers to alert other drivers. Getting out of the travel lanes is the priority.

Question 6 · Lane Changes & Passing
After passing a vehicle on a two-lane road, when should you return to your lane?
- AWhen you can see both of the passed vehicle's headlights in your rearview mirror✓ Correct
- BImmediately after clearing its front bumper
- CAfter you have traveled at least 100 feet past it
Why: After passing, return to your lane only when you can see both headlights of the vehicle you passed in your rearview mirror. This confirms you have enough room to merge back safely.

Question 7 · Pedestrian Laws
When must you yield to pedestrians?
- AOnly at marked crosswalks with signals
- BOnly when a police officer directs you to
- CAt all crosswalks, whether marked or unmarked✓ Correct
Why: Drivers must yield to pedestrians in all crosswalks — both marked (painted) and unmarked (at intersections). You must yield even when the traffic signal is green.

Question 8 · Parking Rules
When parking downhill, which way should you turn your wheels?
- AAway from the curb
- BStraight ahead
- CToward the curb✓ Correct
Why: When parking downhill, turn your wheels toward the curb so the vehicle rolls into the curb and stops if the brakes fail. Always set the parking brake as well.

Question 9 · Sharing the Road
What should you be aware of when driving near large trucks?
- ATrucks have smaller blind spots than cars
- BTrucks can stop faster because of their weight
- CTrucks need much more room to stop and have large blind spots✓ Correct
Why: Large trucks need far more distance to stop than cars and have large blind spots on all four sides. Avoid lingering beside a truck, and never cut in front and brake suddenly.

Question 10 · Turns & Intersections
What must you do when entering a roundabout?
- ASlow down and yield to traffic already in the roundabout✓ Correct
- BStop and wait for all traffic to clear
- CSpeed up to merge as quickly as possible
Why: When approaching a roundabout, slow down, look left, and yield to traffic and pedestrians already in it. Merge only when there is a safe gap.

Question 11 · Weather & Visibility
What should you do if you encounter a flooded roadway?
- ATurn around and find another route✓ Correct
- BDrive through slowly in a low gear

Question 12 · Accidents & Emergencies
What must you do when an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren?
- ASpeed up to get out of its way
- BPull to the right edge of the road and stop until it passes✓ Correct
- CContinue at the same speed but move to the left lane
Why: When an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren, pull to the right side of the road and stop until it has passed. If you are in an intersection, clear it first, then pull over.

A few traffic rules that are particular to Wyoming and frequently show up on the test.
Share the road with big game
Because of Wyoming's abundant wildlife, collisions with deer and other big-game animals are a real danger on rural highways — especially at dawn, dusk, and during spring and fall migration. Slow down where 'deer crossing' signs are posted and scan the roadside, not just the road ahead.
80 mph interstate speed limit
Wyoming posts a maximum speed limit of up to 80 mph for passenger vehicles on many interstate sections under ideal conditions — among the highest in the nation. The posted limit is the maximum for ideal road, weather, and traffic conditions, not a target for every situation.
Move Over Law
When an emergency, utility, or highway maintenance vehicle is stopped or moving under 20 mph with lights activated, you must merge to the lane farthest away on multi-lane roads. On a two-lane road posted 45 mph or higher, you must slow to 20 mph below the posted limit.
Zero-tolerance for drivers under 21
Wyoming's adult DWUI limit is a 0.08% BAC, but drivers under 21 face a youthful-driver suspension at just 0.02% BAC — a 90-day suspension for a first offense and six months for a second within two years.
Intermediate license night and passenger limits
Intermediate license holders may not drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. without a completed exception form, and may not carry more than one passenger under 18 who is not immediate family unless a licensed driver 18 or older is present.
How to get your Wyoming driver's license
The knowledge test is one step in Wyoming's licensing process. Here's how the path typically works for a new driver.
Check the age and eligibility requirements
Eligibility in Wyoming: 15 for an instruction permit; 16 for an intermediate license; 17 for full driving privileges (or 16½ with an approved driver-education course). Have your proof of identity, residency, and any required parental consent ready.
Study the official handbook
Read the Official Wyoming Rules of the Road (dot.state.wy.us) and practice with DMV Ace until you're consistently scoring above 80%.
Pass the knowledge test
The Wyoming written test has 25 questions, and you need 20 correct (80%) to pass. Permit/licensing fee: $40 for an instruction permit ($20 for a restricted instruction permit).
Build supervised driving experience
Hold your permit for the period Wyoming requires and log supervised driving hours with a licensed adult before you schedule the road test.
Pass the road test and get licensed
After you pass the behind-the-wheel road test, Wyoming issues your driver's license — often an intermediate/provisional license first for younger drivers.
Steps are a general guide — always confirm the current process with your local Wyoming DMV office.

- The adult DWUI limit is a 0.08% blood alcohol concentration. Drivers under 21 face a youthful-driver suspension at just 0.02% BAC — 90 days for a first offense and six months for a second within two years — under Wyoming's zero-tolerance law.
